About This App

MakeMyTrip was founded in 2000 by Deep Kalra, making it one of India's earliest internet startups. Headquartered in Gurugram, the company is now India's largest online travel agency (OTA) with approximately 50% market share and over $1 billion in trailing 12-month revenue. MakeMyTrip Limited is listed on Nasdaq under MMYT and is incorporated under the laws of Mauritius — its Form 20-F for the year ended 31 March 2026, filed 27 July 2026, states "incorporated under the laws of Mauritius" three times, and the SEC's own company record lists its state of incorporation as Mauritius. An earlier version of this page said Cayman Islands, which was wrong. The holding company is therefore not an Indian entity, though it operates almost entirely through its wholly-owned Indian subsidiary MakeMyTrip (India) Limited in Gurugram, and its customers are overwhelmingly Indian. Per the beneficial-ownership table in that 20-F, as of 31 March 2026 Trip.com Group held 12.14% of ordinary shares plus 100% of the Class B shares, giving it 17.08% of total voting power; the largest holder of ordinary shares alone is actually the Scottish asset manager Baillie Gifford at 16.46%, followed by Schroders at 8.39% and FMR at 5.04%. The platform covers the full travel spectrum: domestic and international flights, hotels and homestays, holiday packages, bus tickets (via Redbus, which it owns), train tickets, cabs, and a new experiences booking platform launched in 2025. MakeMyTrip also owns GoIbibo, giving it a two-brand strategy across premium and value segments. Its AI assistant Myra handles 55,000+ daily conversations in multiple Indian languages, helping users with itinerary planning, visa queries, and booking modifications up to 90 days before travel. The app is free. MakeMyTrip earns commissions from airlines, hotels, and bus operators, plus convenience fees charged to users at checkout. The MyBiz platform serves corporate travel management, while MyWallet credits and ICICI Bank co-branded cards offer loyalty rewards. Hotel bookings generate the highest margins, and the company has been pushing its packages segment aggressively with curated holiday deals. MakeMyTrip is best suited for Indian travelers who want one-stop booking across all travel modes with the widest hotel and flight inventory. The platform's main weakness is its checkout experience — hidden convenience fees, pre-checked insurance add-ons, and prices that shift between search and payment are persistent user complaints. Refund processing for cancellations is notoriously slow. Budget-conscious travelers may find better deals on Ixigo or EaseMyTrip for flights, but MakeMyTrip's hotel inventory remains unmatched in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MakeMyTrip an Indian company?

It depends which company you mean, and this is the single most-searched question about MakeMyTrip. The listed holding company, MakeMyTrip Limited, is incorporated under the laws of Mauritius and trades on the Nasdaq in New York under the ticker MMYT — its Form 20-F for the year ended 31 March 2026 says "incorporated under the laws of Mauritius" outright, and the SEC's own company record lists Mauritius as its state of incorporation. So the parent is not an Indian-registered entity. But almost everything you actually interact with is Indian: the business is run through a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary, MakeMyTrip (India) Limited, headquartered on the 19th floor of Building No. 5, DLF Cyber City, Gurugram; it was founded in 2000 by Deep Kalra, an Indian founder; and its customers, staff and inventory are overwhelmingly Indian. The accurate one-line answer is that MakeMyTrip is an Indian-founded, Indian-operated business with a Mauritius-incorporated, US-listed parent.

Who owns MakeMyTrip, and does a Chinese company control it?

No single shareholder controls it, and Trip.com's holding is smaller than most people assume — but it is not nothing, and the detail matters. The beneficial-ownership table in MakeMyTrip's 20-F, as of 31 March 2026, shows Trip.com Group holding 10,773,694 ordinary shares (12.14%) plus 5,295,690 Class B shares, which is 100% of the Class B class, together giving it 17.08% of total voting power. Class B shares are not ordinary stock: MakeMyTrip's constitution reserves certain matters to them and provides for Class B directors, and the terms of issue require those directors to resign if the holders' stake falls below 10% of voting securities. So Trip.com is a minority holder with disproportionate governance rights rather than a controlling owner. Interestingly, the largest holder of ordinary shares alone is not Trip.com at all but Baillie Gifford, a Scottish asset manager, at 16.46%, followed by Schroders at 8.39% and FMR at 5.04%. Trip.com's stake was materially larger before a 2025 buyback.

Is MakeMyTrip listing in India?

Its Indian subsidiary is trying to. On 17 July 2026 MakeMyTrip told the SEC that its wholly-owned subsidiary MakeMyTrip (India) Limited had confidentially pre-filed a draft red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, BSE and the National Stock Exchange, for a proposed IPO and listing of MMT India's equity shares on the Main Board of both exchanges. The filing describes the offer as a sale of existing shares by MakeMyTrip and its Singapore subsidiary ibibo Group Holdings, and states that MMT India will remain a subsidiary of MakeMyTrip afterwards and stay in its consolidated accounts. In other words this is a partial sell-down, not a spin-off, and it would not change who ultimately controls the group. It is a pre-filed draft rather than an approved offer, so there is no confirmed date, price or size yet — treat anything you read about those as speculation until SEBI clears it.

Does MakeMyTrip own Goibibo and redBus?

Yes, both, and its own SEC filing spells out the corporate structure. MakeMyTrip refers to MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and redBus as its three brands. The Goibibo business was transferred out of ibibo Group Private Limited into MakeMyTrip (India) Limited on 1 February 2023 under a scheme of arrangement between the two wholly-owned Indian subsidiaries, while the redBus business was retained by ibibo India. This is why comparing MakeMyTrip against Goibibo or redBus for a better price often disappoints — you are comparing storefronts owned by the same group rather than genuinely competing agencies. If you want a real second quote, check the airline's or hotel's own website, or IRCTC directly for trains.

What does MakeMyTrip charge, and why does the price change at checkout?

The app is free to download and MakeMyTrip earns from commissions paid by airlines, hotels and bus operators, plus convenience fees added to your booking. The price movement between search and payment is the most consistent complaint from users, and it usually comes from three things stacking up: a convenience fee applied per passenger, add-ons such as travel insurance or seat selection that can arrive pre-selected, and fare inventory genuinely changing while you browse. Before you pay, expand the full fare breakdown and untick anything you did not deliberately choose. If you are booking trains, note that IRCTC is the official source and booking through an agency adds a fee that direct booking does not.
