It is the canonical source for confirmed Indian Railways bookings and remains the only app with real-time integration into the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). However, the app is widely criticised for poor UX — the interface has been called dated, buggy, and ad-heavy, and Tatkal-hour outages are a recurring complaint. December 2025 saw a major outage during Tatkal booking with Downdetector logging spikes across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata, despite IRCTC's official 99.98% uptime claim. Payment failures with money deducted but tickets not booked are the single most common user complaint, with refunds typically taking 5-7 working days.
