Urban Company Limited runs India's largest managed marketplace for home and beauty services. Unlike a classifieds or lead-generation site, it trains and background-verifies the professionals on its platform, sets the price list, handles payment and offers a service warranty โ the customer books a defined service at a shown price rather than negotiating with a contractor. The catalogue spans women's salon and skin care, men's grooming, massage and wellness, regular and deep home cleaning, AC and appliance repair and servicing, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, pest control, and a domestic-help vertical launched as 'Insta Maids' and renamed 'Insta Help' in March 2025 after labour-rights groups objected to the original name. The company was founded in 2014 by Abhiraj Singh Bhal, Varun Khaitan and Raghav Chandra, rebranded from UrbanClap to Urban Company in January 2020, and listed on the NSE (URBANCO) and BSE (544515) on 17 September 2025 after a Rs 1,900 crore IPO that was subscribed roughly 109 times and opened 57-64% above its issue price. Outside India it operates in the UAE and Singapore, and in Saudi Arabia through a 50:50 joint venture with Saudi Manpower Solutions Co. branded 'Yammak'. It previously operated in Australia and has exited that market. The honest caveat worth knowing before you book: Urban Company has a long and well-documented history of disputes with the professionals on its own platform over commission rates, mandatory training and subscription fees, and account blocking โ including beautician protests outside its Gurugram office in 2021 that led it to cut its commission from 30% to 25%. Customer-side complaints cluster around upselling during appliance repair visits and cancellation fees charged when a professional did not show up.
