by Eternal Limited
District is Eternal Limited's (the company formerly named Zomato Limited) unified going-out app covering movies, live events, dining and sports-venue bookings. It launched in November 2024, built directly on the infrastructure Eternal acquired that August when it bought Paytm's entire ticketing business — Paytm Insider and TicketNew — for Rs 2,048 crore. TicketNew's existing cinema partnerships (PVR INOX, Cinepolis, Miraj and others) became District's movie-ticketing backbone, while Insider's live-events catalogue folded in alongside Zomato's restaurant-discovery data. The app covers four verticals in one place: movie tickets with seat selection and a seat-map-sharing feature for groups, concert/comedy/theatre event tickets, restaurant discovery and table bookings, and a 'Play' feature for booking sports venues (badminton, cricket, football). It has since expanded into beauty, fashion and home-decor bookings as well. District is free to download and browse. It earns through a per-ticket convenience/booking fee on movies and events — disclosed at checkout and non-refundable, the same fee structure critics dislike about BookMyShow — plus restaurant commissions and an optional paid membership called District Pass (reported around Rs 999 for three months, with introductory pricing as low as Rs 99-199 during promotions) that bundles extra discounts. Built by the same team behind Zomato and Blinkit, District inherits Zomato's payment stack (UPI, cards, wallets) and app polish, and launched with aggressive first-booking discounts (up to Rs 200 off, BOGO offers) aimed squarely at pulling users away from BookMyShow. It is best suited for users who already use Zomato and want one app for going-out plans. It is still a much smaller platform than BookMyShow in cinema and event coverage, especially outside major metros, and going-out remains a small fraction of Eternal's overall revenue next to food delivery and Blinkit — so its scale is not yet BookMyShow's equal, even though it is the first competitor in two decades with real marketing and distribution muscle behind it.

They share an owner and a backend, but they are not the same site. Eternal bought TicketNew's parent company in August 2024 and built District on top of it, so District's cinema ticketing runs on what was TicketNew's infrastructure. TicketNew itself is still live: ticketnew.com still loads its own separately branded movie-booking site, and checked on 9 September 2026 it was serving its page assets from cdn.district.in — the same platform underneath, a different front door. So if you have used TicketNew, you have already used what District is built on, and your TicketNew bookings still happen at ticketnew.com.
Paytm Insider is gone as a separate destination. Checked on 9 September 2026, insider.in issues a redirect straight to district.in — the live-events catalogue that used to sit on Insider now lives inside District. This is the opposite of what happened to TicketNew, which kept its own site. Both brands came to Eternal in the same purchase; only one of them still has a front end.
Both answers describe the same company. Zomato Limited renamed itself Eternal Limited in 2025 — the board approved the change on 6 February 2025, shareholders approved it on 10 March 2025, and the shares began trading under the new name on 9 April 2025 (NSE: ETERNAL, BSE scrip 543320). It was a rename, not a sale or a spin-off: same listed entity, same shares, new name. District launched in November 2024, while the company was still called Zomato, which is why older articles credit it to Zomato and newer ones to Eternal. The food-delivery app Zomato still exists as a separate app under the same parent.
The consumer app launched in mid-November 2024. Three dates get confused. On 1 August 2024 Zomato announced it was building a going-out app. On 27–28 August 2024 it closed the purchase of Paytm's ticketing business — Orbgen Technologies, which ran TicketNew, and Wasteland Entertainment, which ran Paytm Insider — for Rs 2,048 crore. The District app itself only reached users on 15–16 November 2024. If you have read that District launched in August 2024, that date belongs to the announcement and the acquisition, not the launch.
It is the first one in about two decades with genuine distribution behind it, but it is not yet an equal. District inherited TicketNew's cinema partnerships, including PVR INOX, Cinepolis and Miraj, and it can market to Zomato's existing user base. Its Play Store listing showed a 4.7 rating from about 1.89 lakh ratings when checked on 9 September 2026. Where it still falls short is coverage: outside the major metros, and for smaller single-screen cinemas and regional events, BookMyShow lists inventory District does not. It is worth checking both before assuming a show is sold out.
