Indian ChatGPT Alternatives 2026: Indus, Puch AI & More

Indian ChatGPT Alternatives 2026: Indus, Puch AI & More

2026-07-02

No Indian app fully replaces ChatGPT for general use in 2026. And the one most people have heard of — Ola's Kruti — is currently offline. But that doesn't mean there's nothing worth using. For specific jobs (Indian-language conversations, voice input, zero-setup answers, keeping your data in India), there are genuinely useful made-in-India options today.

What "Indian ChatGPT alternative" usually means

When people search for this, they're usually after one of three things:

  1. A free, made-in-India AI they can actually use, not just a research demo.
  2. An AI that understands my Indian language properly — Hindi, Tamil, Hinglish, code-switching mid-sentence, the way people actually talk.
  3. "Whatever happened to Kruti — is it still working?" — curiosity about the app that got all the hype.

There's also a data-sovereignty angle: some users specifically want an AI that keeps their queries on India-region servers rather than routing everything through the US.

Apps you can actually use today

Indus by Sarvam

Best for: Indian-language conversations, voice input, exam/education help, and document Q&A — with India-region data residency.

Indus is the consumer chat app from Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru sovereign-AI lab founded by Dr. Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar. It launched publicly in February 2026 and is the front-end for the Sarvam 105B model, trained from scratch on 22 Indian languages — not fine-tuned on a Western base model. It's free, on web, Android and iOS.

What works well

  • Genuinely fluent in 11+ Indian languages, and handles Hindi-English code-switching natively instead of clumsily translating
  • Voice-first design — tap the mic, speak in Hindi or Hinglish, get spoken and written answers back
  • File and PDF upload with question-answering on top of the document
  • Real-time web search built in, so it can answer current-events questions
  • India-region infrastructure — your queries don't route through US servers like ChatGPT and Gemini do
  • Free, with no subscription tier at launch

Watch out for

  • Noticeably slower than ChatGPT and Gemini on complex queries
  • Can't generate images or video — text and voice only
  • You can't delete individual chats without deleting your whole account
  • Reasoning/thinking mode can't be turned off, which adds to the wait
  • Still in beta — occasional stray XML tags leak into responses
  • Compute-constrained, so expect capacity limits; it's not GPT-class outside Indic and education tasks

Rating: 4.2 on Google Play | Pricing: Free | See full details

Sarvam also makes Samvaad, a voice-focused companion app — worth a look if voice is your main use case.

Puch AI

Best for: Everyday questions in your own language, with zero setup — especially if you've never used an AI chatbot before.

Puch AI takes a completely different approach: it lives entirely inside WhatsApp. There's no app to install and no login — you just message it like a contact. Built by a Bengaluru startup co-founded by Siddharth Bhatia, it supports 20+ Indian languages, Hinglish, voice, image and sticker generation, fact-checking, web search, and YouTube summaries.

What works well

  • No install or account needed to start using it
  • 20+ Indian languages and Hinglish, tuned for how people actually type
  • Handles voice notes, image/sticker generation, web search and fact-checks
  • Simple enough that people trying an AI chatbot for the first time can pick it up right away

Watch out for

  • WhatsApp-only means no chat history UI, no long documents, no serious multi-step workflows
  • Reasoning depth is light compared to ChatGPT, so it's best for quick answers rather than serious work
  • The business model is unclear ("free for now"), so features may change
  • Always confirm the current handle on puch.ai before you start — WhatsApp numbers can change

The one everyone's heard of — but it's offline: Kruti

Kruti (Krutrim Assistant) was pitched as India's first agentic AI assistant, able to book Ola cabs, order food, and pay bills across 13 Indian languages. It got enormous hype.

The reality in 2026 is harder. As of around April 2026, the consumer Kruti app is offline — kruti.ai shows a maintenance page and the app was pulled from both stores while parent company Ola Krutrim restructured, pivoting toward cloud infrastructure and away from the consumer assistant. Lifetime downloads never crossed half a million, and a live demo at an AI summit famously crashed on stage.

Hype outran reality here. This category moves fast and products disappear. If you're specifically looking for Kruti, use Indus by Sarvam or Puch AI instead for now, and check back on Kruti before installing anything.

Also exists — but not for regular users

A few Indian AI efforts get named a lot but aren't consumer apps you can just download. Worth knowing so you don't go hunting:

  • BharatGPT (CoRover.ai) — powers IRCTC's "AskDisha" bot. B2B and government, not a standalone consumer app.
  • Gnani.ai (Inya VoiceOS) — a voice-AI/customer-support company; its voice-to-voice model is a research preview.
  • Hanooman (SML / 3AI, Reliance-backed) — enterprise and healthcare multilingual GenAI.
  • BharatGen — a government-funded sovereign-LLM research initiative.
  • Soket AI / Gan AI — IndiaAI Mission model-builders with no consumer app today.

These matter for India's AI ecosystem, but none is something a normal user opens to ask a question this week.

Quick comparison

App Maker Use it via Languages Best for Status
Indus by Sarvam Sarvam AI (Bengaluru) Web, Android, iOS 11+ Indian Indic chat, voice, docs, education Live
Puch AI Puch AI (Bengaluru) WhatsApp 20+ Indian Zero-setup everyday questions Live
Kruti Ola Krutrim (Bengaluru) — 13 Indian (was agentic tasks) Offline

So what should you actually use?

  • If you need Indian languages, voice, education, or document work, use Indus by Sarvam. It's free, India-region, and best-in-class on Indic tasks — just expect it to be slower and occasionally capacity-limited.
  • If you want everyday questions answered in your own language with zero setup, and you're new to AI chatbots, use Puch AI inside WhatsApp.
  • If you need serious coding, deep reasoning, broad general knowledge, or tool integrations, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude still clearly lead, and Indian models aren't there yet.

One last thing: this space changes almost monthly. Apps launch, pause, and pivot fast — Kruti is the proof. Verify an app is live and check its current pricing before you install it. When in doubt, start with the free option that needs no commitment.
