TallyPrime is the current flagship of Tally Solutions Private Limited, incorporated in Bengaluru in 1991 (the product itself dates to 1986, when Shyam Sunder Goenka and his son Bharat built Peutronics Financial Accountant after a fire destroyed the family's cotton business). Nearly four decades later it is still unlisted, still family-run — Tejas Goenka is Managing Director, Bharat Goenka is Vice-Chairperson — and no venture capital, private equity or foreign investor appears in any public record. On FY2025 revenue of Rs 746.58 crore across 2.5 million-plus businesses, that makes Tally one of the very few Indian software products of real scale with no foreign capital behind it. What you actually get is a Windows desktop application that does accounting, inventory, billing, payroll and Indian statutory compliance, with your data sitting on your own machine rather than a vendor's server. Compliance is the reason most Indian businesses use it: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, the Invoice Management System with invoice-level ITC reduction, e-invoice and e-way bill generation and one-click cancellation, TDS and TCS returns updated for the 2025 Income Tax Act, and connected banking with Axis, SBI, Kotak and ICICI. Release 7.0 (December 2025) added SmartFind and scheduled cloud backup via TallyDrive; Release 7.1 (May 2026) added invoice print templates and OAuth-based email, alongside "Docs by Ira", Tally's AI feature that turns supplier documents into vouchers. Pricing is unusual for 2026 in that it is genuinely perpetual: Rs 22,500 + GST buys Silver (one user) forever, Rs 67,500 buys Gold (unlimited users on a LAN). Rental is Rs 750/month for Silver and Rs 2,250/month for Gold. The catch is Tally Software Services — roughly Rs 4,500/year for Silver — which is technically optional but carries the statutory updates, so in a GST regime that changes several times a year it is effectively mandatory. Mobile and multi-location access costs extra again through TallyPrime Cloud Access at Rs 600 per user per month, hosted on Oracle Cloud. There is no free tier; only a 7-day trial and a restricted free educational mode. The honest weaknesses are real. TallyPrime runs on Windows only — no Mac, no Linux, and no official mobile app, which means the "Tally on mobile" apps on the Play Store are third-party. It assumes you understand double-entry accounting and Tally's keyboard conventions, so counter staff and non-accountant founders find it hard going where a cloud billing tool would be obvious. Reviewers consistently flag the dated interface, thin third-party integrations, near-zero built-in automation, and multi-user slowdowns on larger data sets. Best suited to businesses with an in-house accountant or a CA, high transaction volumes and serious GST exposure. If you are a one-person service business sending twenty invoices a month, ProfitBooks, Vyapar or Zoho Books will fit better.
