Bhashini is the Government of India's AI-powered language translation platform, developed under the National Language Translation Mission by MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). Launched as part of the Digital India initiative, Bhashini aims to break language barriers across India's 22 scheduled languages — enabling text translation, voice-to-text, text-to-voice, and real-time conversational translation between any supported language pair. Unlike Google Translate, which treats Indian languages as secondary, Bhashini is purpose-built for Indic language pairs with models trained specifically on Indian language datasets. Best suited for Indian citizens, government workers, and businesses that need reliable translation between Indian languages — especially for official documents, e-governance, and cross-language communication. The translation quality for major language pairs (Hindi-English, Hindi-Tamil) is competitive with Google Translate, but less-common pairs (e.g., Bodo-Dogri) can be rough. Users needing translation for non-Indian languages should stick with Google Translate or DeepL.

Bhashini was launched on 4 July 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled “Digital India Bhashini” at Digital India Week 2022 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, as recorded in the Press Information Bureau release for that event. Two other dates get mistaken for the launch. The National Language Translation Mission — the umbrella scheme Bhashini delivers — was announced earlier, in the Union Budget 2021 speech. And on 17 December 2023 the Prime Minister used Bhashini live on stage at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi to translate a Hindi speech into Tamil in real time; that demonstration was widely covered and is the most likely reason people remember a “2023 launch”. It was a demonstration of an already-live platform, not a launch.
Yes. Bhashini is built and run by the Digital India Bhashini Division, an independent business division of Digital India Corporation, which is a Section 8 (not-for-profit) company under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It delivers the National Language Translation Mission. The Google Play listing for the official app carries Government of India and MeitY attribution throughout. It is a government platform, not a private product using a government-sounding name.
The official Android app is BHASHINI, package com.dibd.bhashini, described on its listing as a “Translation and Conversation Application for Indian languages”. It shows 1M+ downloads and a 4.1 rating from 3,859 ratings when the store is queried from India (checked 9 September 2026). Be aware there is a separate, unrelated listing called “Bhashini.ai Speak” (package ai.bhashini.speak) with only a couple of dozen ratings. Despite the similar name it is not the government app. Check the package name before installing.
Bhashini covers the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Coverage is not uniform across every service, though — speech recognition, text-to-speech, translation and transliteration each support their own subset, and quality on widely used pairs such as Hindi–English is far better than on rarer pairs such as Bodo–Dogri. Bhashini's own website is a JavaScript application that does not serve its language list to plain HTTP clients, so this list is taken from Bhashini's published API documentation rather than read off the marketing page.
For citizens, yes — the app and the website are free to use, with no ads and no paid tier. For developers the answer is more limited than “free” suggests. Bhashini's own API documentation states that free API access is intended for proofs of concept and low-volume use, and directs anyone running a production service, or any commercial integrator charging their own end users, to contact the Bhashini team for a paid plan. So it is free to use, but not unconditionally free to build a business on.
VoicERA is an open-source voice AI stack launched on 18 February 2026 at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, built by the Digital India Bhashini Division together with EkStep Foundation, IIIT-Bangalore, AI4Bharat and COSS, and deployed on Bhashini's national infrastructure. It is confirmed in a Press Information Bureau release and on digitalindia.gov.in. In short, VoicERA is a separate voice stack that runs on top of Bhashini rather than a feature inside the Bhashini app.
