Bhashini

Bhashini is the Government of India's AI-powered language translation platform, developed under the National Language Translation Mission by MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). Launched as part of the Digital India initiative, Bhashini aims to break language barriers across India's 22 scheduled languages — enabling text translation, voice-to-text, text-to-voice, and real-time conversational translation between any supported language pair. The platform leverages multiple AI models contributed by Indian research institutions and startups through an open ecosystem approach. Key features include speech recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech synthesis, and document translation. At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, MeitY unveiled VoicERA — an open-source Voice AI stack built on Bhashini's infrastructure — signalling the platform's evolution from a translation tool into a foundational language AI layer for India. Bhashini is completely free — no premium tiers, no ads, no data monetisation. As a government initiative, it's funded by public investment and designed for universal access. The app has crossed 1 million downloads on Google Play. Unlike Google Translate, which treats Indian languages as secondary, Bhashini is purpose-built for Indic language pairs with models trained specifically on Indian language datasets. Best suited for Indian citizens, government workers, and businesses that need reliable translation between Indian languages — especially for official documents, e-governance, and cross-language communication. The translation quality for major language pairs (Hindi-English, Hindi-Tamil) is competitive with Google Translate, but less-common pairs (e.g., Bodo-Dogri) can be rough. Users needing translation for non-Indian languages should stick with Google Translate or DeepL.
